THE MASTER WORD LIST
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
At the core of the WORDY package is a list of 100,701 words, the file
WORD.LST. This is *not* the OSPD3 (tm) list, but is extremely closely
"compatible" with the =final release= of same. As of this release of WORDY,
there is an estimated "error" rate of less than 0.01%, perhaps five or less.
This word list has been cross checked by a number of people active in the
Scrabble (tm) community, and to them go my thanks. If you find any words
that you feel do not belong on the list or are missing, please notify the
author.
SPECIAL OFFER: If you are the *first one* to report errors (not previously
corrected in version 4.42 or later of WORDY) in the master word list,
WORD.LST, I will pay you $1.00 for each error found. The definition of an
"error" is a misspelling or an entry not found in the OSPD3 or a word found
in the OSPD3 but missing from WORD.LST (inflections of OSPD3 entries are not
errors). There are also a few "signature" words in the list that are not
errors, such as "eventuality", a legitimate word not included in the OSPD3,
final release. Legitimate words, even if not in the OSPD3, do *not* count as
errors! Note that this offer applies to *registered* users only. Reports
from unregistered users will be gratefully received, and will probably
result in a waiver of the registration fee, but no bonus can be paid. Report
errors preferably to my e-mail address, given below.

The master word list, WORD.LST, is herewith released into the Public Domain.
Anyone is free to use it or distribute it in any manner they see fit, even
if the registration fee for WORDY is not paid. This word list is my gift to
the Scrabble (tm) community, as an alternate to "official" word lists. Game
designers may feel free to incorporate the WORD.LST into their games. Please
credit me as the originator [while I am publicity shy, a little recognition
always helps]. Note that if you as a game designer use the WORD.LST in your
product, you may still copyright and protect the product, but you may *not*,
under law, copyright or in any way restrict redistribution of the WORD.LST
portion of your product. This *may* under law restrict your rights to
restrict your users' rights, but that is only fair.
As of January, 1996, WORD.LST is the only complete electronic list available
reflecting the *unexpurgated* final release of the 3rd edition of the OSPD
(tm). Update: in midsummer 1996, WORD.LST remains the only totally compre-
hensive Scrabble (tm) word list *free* and freely available.
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
WORD.LST (pronounced "word-dot-list") is now the generic term for the
ASCII-format word file released into the Public Domain as a standard and a
reference for crossword-type games. As laptop and palmtop computers become
more common and affordable, it will be convenient to use the WORD.LST in
conjunction with utilities such as SEARCH.EXE (part of the WORDY package) to
adjudicate disputes in word game competitive play. The OSPD (tm) in its
various versions and incarnations is not particularly well suited for this
application as it is poorly organized, sometimes difficult to interpret, and
clumsy to use (try locating the word PELVES in the printed OSPD, for
example). Furthermore, the WORD.LST is free from corporate politics,
scheming and conniving, committee wrangling, "politically correct"
appeasement, compromising, greed motive, and all other such ***nonsense***.
The WORD.LST is yours, word game players! Use it. Help keep it updated and
corrected. Distribute it (you do *not* need my permission, or anyone else's,
to do so, but tell me about it)!

(corrections thanks to Robert Parker)
[Since March, 1996, no new corrections have been reported.]
Everything has been corrected and updated in this version, 4.42, of WORDY.
As of version 4.42 of WORDY, the master word list, WORD.LST, has been updated
to reflect the changes in the =final release= of THIRD EDITION of the
OSPD (tm). The OSPD3 (tm) has been valid in tournament play as of 02/01/96.
Note that the WORD.LST has *not* been expurgated.
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
As a registration incentive, I will, upon receipt of the registration, mail
you a disk containing a LONGWORD.LST, a list of 171,000+ words over 8 letters
long. Almost all the utilities in WORDY *will* work on this list. This means,
among other things, that a supplementary dictionary will no longer be neces-
sary to verify the "validity" of words too long to be included in the OSPD3
(just use the SEARCH utility in the WORDY package).
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
Scrabble (tm) and OSPD (tm) are trademarks owned by Milton Bradley, a divi-
sion of Hasbro.
WORDY is *not* copyrighted and is *not* a trademark. It may be found under
'W' in any dictionary, just as scrabble, the verb, may be found under 'S'.
The make-believe word "hasbro" may be whimsically defined as "possessing a
male sibling" (named Milton, I guess).
